The Cost Of Quick Cash

What are Payday Loans?

Payday loans are short-term, high-interest loans designed to provide quick cash, typically to cover urgent expenses until your next paycheck. They are usually small amounts, often $100 to $1,000, and are expected to be repaid within a few weeks—usually by your next payday.

The process is simple: you provide proof of income, agree to repay the loan on your next payday, and in return, receive the funds almost immediately. Sounds great, right?

Wrong.

Payday loans come with extremely high interest rates and fees, often upwards of 400% APR.

And 80% of them are rolled over (aka, the borrower must borrow more to repay the last one). This can lead to a cycle of debt that's difficult to escape.

Payday loans are on the rise, especially the online version. In the digital age, you can now get quick cash from your phone or computer, from lenders who can operate across state lines, and who may be skirting regulations designed to protect you.

Payday loans have been around for decades, known for providing short-term financial relief to those in need. Unfortunately, the old problem of exorbitant fees and sky-high interest rates hasn't changed.

Breaking the Cycle with Alternatives

What are some alternatives?

- Credit unions often offer small-dollar loans with much lower rates
- Make sure to take care of your credit score as it will make it easier to borrow in the banking system
- Paycheck advances from your employer may be a better option (always check fees and restrictions)
- Installment payment plans
- Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) plans may give you more breathing room
- Borrow from family or friends if that's an option

"An investment in knowledge often pays the best interest."
