All the Financial Advice You Need On An Index Card
Dec 03, 2025

The Index Card built around a simple, almost radical idea:
Everything you need to know about managing money can fit on one index card.
Harold Pollack, a professor at the University of Chicago, once said this half-jokingly. A journalist (Helaine Olen) pushed him to prove it and together they named that idea into a book demystifying personal finance for the average person.

The core message is simple.
Personal finance doesn't have to be complicated. We don't need fancy products, secret strategies, or Wall Street-level sophisticated jargon. The clearest path to wealth is a system of simple, evidence-based, repeatable habits.
The book argues that the financial industry thrives on making things feel confusing. But the truth is: if you follow a few clear rules consistently, you'll be financially secure.

Pollack's original handwritten card had 9 principles. The book expands on them, but here are the core ideas:
1. Save 10-20% of your income. Automate it. Value saving, default, not optional.
2. Pay off credit card balances in full. High-interest debt is the biggest threat to wealth-building.
3. Invest in low-cost index funds. Don't chase hot stock tips. Own the whole market inexpensively.
4. Max out retirement accounts if possible. Especially tax-advantaged ones: 401(k), IRA, Roth IRA.
5. Use the 15-year mortgage, not the 30-year, if you can. You'll save a fortune in interest.
6. Maintain adequate insurance. Protect yourself from catastrophic loss.
7. Avoid financial advisors who earn commissions. If you need help, hire a fee-only fiduciary.
8. Keep things simple. You don't need exotic products or constant tinkering.
9. Be generous to others. The authors include generosity as a core part of a good financial life.

I love this book, I think they're missing a few key elements: I'll touch upon them next week. They won't come as a surprise to any of my former students!
